Who is Naptural Counselor?
My real name is Akua, a Natural Hair Enthusiast. However, I am known as Naptural Counselor, in the blog community. I am originally from Kansas, born and raised (did you chuckle). I currently work in the Criminal Justice field, but obtained my educational training in the counseling arena. I have a passion for people and relationships--particularly interested in family dynamics and interactions. I relocated to Fort Worth, TX, by way of Nashville, TN in 2011. I am one proud god-mom of 8 godchildren, in which most of them are mini-curlies.
What were some of your thought processes in making the choice to transition from Relaxed to Natural Hair?
I moved to Nashville in 2007 and I visited 3-4 different salons. My hair went from healthy long hair to above the shoulder length within 5 months. My exact thoughts: If I was paying $145 per month to a stylist to damage my hair, why not save money and cut it myself. My sister made the choice to avoid relaxers long before I did--so I had a solid resource to begin educating myself about living a relaxed (chemical) free lifestyle.
Did you transition or BC?
Yes, I technically transitioned for 11 months. I transitioned with wigs and sew-ins.
Did you have any fears or concerns after you BC'd the relaxed ends?
I had a few fears. I wondered if I would be attractive to the opposite sex, basically. I did care about how others in the workplace would perceive me. I was unsure about their projections and perceptions.
What surprised you the most after becoming Natural?
I was shocked by the amount of "open acceptance" in the workplace and in the community. I was overwhelmed by the LOVE and MOVEMENT. I did not realize the magnitude of SUPPORT regarding products, styles, etc. The Natural Hair community is intimate and empowering to those wanting to know more about adapting a healthier chemical free regimen.
